Ready Player One

Ready Player One

By: Ernest Cline

“Three hidden keys open three secret gates Wherein the errant will be tested for worthy traits And those with the skill to survive these straits Will reach The End where the prize awaits.”

Is the year 2044, and reality has “faded”, people are practically living on the virtual world call The OASIS, created by Halliday. Upon his death Halliday having no heirs, leaves an “Easter egg” in the virtual world and whoever finds it will win his entire fortune.

The story follows teenage Wade Watts, who spends most of his time in the OASIS, trying to escape the reality of leaving in a trailer park with his Aunt and way to many people. Wade has dedicated most of his life to study the puzzles that are based on pop culture references of decades past. When he stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself threatened by other players. He ends up teaming up whit his best friend Aech, his crush Artemis and new friends he finds along the way in order to survive. Together they’ll try to open the 3 gates and win the fortune.

There were a lot of things going on in this book. First of all you get a lot of background story and 80’s trivia in order to understand it. And even though most of the pop culture references from the 80 flew right by me, it was really enjoyable. You didn’t need to know it to be able to understand it or follow the story. Also I like that the romance didn’t over shadow the based of the story. It was pretty but it wasn’t all over the place.

I could say a lot of things but I’m trying not to write spoilers.
